The Men and Ladies were in action this weekend as the Ladies travelled to Middelton whilst the Men entertained Crawley
The Ladies 5th team travelled to Middleton on Sunday to face worthy opponents. 1st pair of Liza Loughton and Cecilia Holland took the first set off the opposition 2nd pair comfortably 6 – 1, with great volleying from Liza. they struggled to keep ahead in the second set and eventually lost 5 – 7. They then faced a tight Champions tie break and sadly lost 8 – 10. Ann Naested and Ann Harding had a tough match against the No.1 pair and despite some great ground strokes eventually going down 4 and 1 to the more experienced pair . The second match saw Liza and Cecilia having to dig deep with most games going to deuce . They lost the first set 5-7 but won the second 6 – 2 – the tie break was exciting and close but they pulled it off and won 10 –8. Ann and Ann didn’t fare as well and lost their match but never gave up.!
The Men’s 3rd handed Adrian Draghici a return to team tennis. Adrian recently returning to the Club in a coaching Capacity. He teamed up with Adrian Rutherford as 1st pair, whilst Peter Cuthbertson teamed up with Nick Rider as the second pair. The opening rubbers saw both pairs going to 3 sets, with two Adrian’s using a mixture of serve and volley along with good deep ground strokes coming through 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 against Briggs and Morley. Rider and Cuthbertson battled gamely against Mundy and Darkin before the greater consistency of the opposition saw the Weald pair going down 5-7, 7-6, 1-6.
The second round of rubbers and with the two Adrian’s now fully in tune with each other dominated Darkin and Munday with 4 and 5 win , whilst the out of sorts Rider and Cuthbetson could do nothing as Morley and Briggs dominated in a 5 and 0 win. Overall a draw being a fair result and keeps the Weald out of relegation trouble.
