Swede Timmy Takes the Title.
18 Players enjoy the Christamas American tournament
Sunday saw the Annual "Super Set " tournament, for Men & Ladies when Petra Sedova played as a “Honary man”. After being postponed from the Sunday before Christmas, the event drew an entry of 14 for the men on a knockout basis, and five young ladies play a round robin box again of just one set.
Despite the cold weather, the Tennis was red hot as Brett Knell looked to be the first player to retain his title. Brett started in empathic fashion with a win over David Lewis, whist Dan Colley was pushed all the way by Sedova before coming through 6-4.
Meanwhile, Club Champion Timmy Gedin was quietly moving through the draw and was waiting in a rematch of last years final when Knell set that up having defeated 2007 champion Dan Colley.
Could History re write its self with another dramatic tie break shoot out? Things however were not looking good for Brett as he found himself 2-5 down and staring defeat in the face. Brett somehow managed to regroup to break back against the big hitting Timmy, with both players then holding serve from then on in, we were down to a tie break shoot out. With the drama not quite so intense it was Club Champion Timmy Gedin who took the tie break and the coveted title.
Meanwhile Izzy Holland and Rachel Molloy having both achieved victories over Lauren Mcmahon, Lauren Palmer and Rose Naestaed, served up a worthy final with both girls hitting heavy ground stokes, with the rare site of Molloy looking to attack the net and achieving a number of successes.
Both girls gave their all, but in the end, it was Holland who triumphed for her first Weald title as she hit another winner down the line .
On the League front the Men's 6th team started their winter campaign with a 2-2 draw against Hurstpierpoint. Hector Loughton and Maurice McMahon securing the two victories whilst John Hole and Phil Latham had to settle for taking just the one set against the Hurst 1st pair.
The New Year Break also saw four of the Weald Juniors were in action over the Christmas period at the Falmer Junior Open, Izzy Holland, Rose Naested and Arthur Hill put up spirited performances against seeded and higher rated opponents. Peter Molloy having had a good run of results recently, was unable to produce the same intensity as he went out in round 2 of the 14/u's to Hertfordshire Jake Munns the No.2 seed. Molloy had some solace in taking the 16/u Boys consolation event with a good win over Seaford's Tom Vartadal in the final.
Finally on the social front 18 members participated in a Christmas American tournament, where all members bought a Lunch time dish. However, before eating more Christmas turkey and pudding there was to be much laughter and banter on the Tennis courts as players of all ability enjoyed friendly rivalry. Prizes were given to winners and best sports. Best sports awards going to Rupert Ayton and Anne Naested.
