Coaches and players from The Weald attended the annual LTA Awards Evening at the AMEX Stadium recently. The event showcases the successes of everyone in the County at all levels, with awards for individuals and teams, including most improved players, volunteers, coaches and lifetime achievements. Tom Paine, one the Club’s Coaches, won the award for Junior Team Captain. His team described him as “kind, thoughtful, fun and encouraging”. The Men’s 2nd Team, under Captain Brett Knell, took top spot in Sussex Division 1 (with Coach Bradley Bant picking up the trophy), while Carl Valentine, as Captain of the Men’s 4th Team picked up an award for finishing top of their division. Freya Lumsden, one of our Junior players, was among a group who won awards for Junior Volunteers.
The Ladies 2nd Team suffered defeat at the hands of local rivals Southdown 1st Team who fielded a strong team, although the autumn sun shone. Lisa Cairns and Julie Nicholson fought hard against Kate Sherwood & Jane Dodwell, but the Lewes pair took the match 6-2, 6-4. Kate Cotter and Kristina Banham struggled against Pascale Davison & Kim Tuddenham and could blame lack of match practice but were unable to obtain consistency going down 6-2, 6-1. Julie and Lisa then had a tussle against Pascale & Kim, taking the first set, but taking the second set, the Lewes players also took the Championship tie-break. Kate and Kristina were defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Kate and Kim. A rather disappointing 1-3 defeat
